Streetscape
No single factor
contributes more to the appearance or image of downtown than its streetscape.
Along the gateways of downtown and major avenues, streetscape helps
define the urban center. A properly designed streetscape gives continuity
and a sense of order to streets. Typically, what is found in the older
declining areas of the community, are gateways and pedestrian linkages
that have fragmented and visually confused streetscapes. The impression
of strength and stability, which the investor looks for, and which adds
to the livability of the area, is missing.
Plans for streetscape
in Downtown Sanford have been in existence since 1998. Activities under
the streetscape plan include demolition of the current gutter and concrete,
the removal of the existing trees, burial of electric lines, installation
of brick-pavers, installation of new urban-friendly trees, installation
of an irrigation system, and installation of decorative lighting. Fortunately,
the City of Sanford in partnership with DSI has just received a Community
Development Block Grant (CDBG) to cover the costs of the Phase I of
the Streetscape Plan. Phase I of the streetscape includes the Chatham
Street block between Charlotte Avenue and McIver Street, on the southside
Charlotte Avenue block between Chatham Street and Little Buffalo Creek,
and the northside of Charlotte Avenue block between Hawkins Avenue and
Little Buffalo Creek. This phase is scheduled to be completed within
the next year and a half. DSI will continue to implement streetscape
on other blocks as funding is available. Please click on the link below
